Graphic designer, artist, recent newlywed, and full-time mom…to put it lightly, Jenevieve, the Creative Director of Got Beauty, is a woman on the go. In each activity she devotes herself to, she carries herself with sheer intellect, dazzling creativity, and an utterly sweet disposition, which makes it impossibly difficult not to love her. To the dismay of many 30-somethings these days, working around the clock can start to take a toll on your skin and emphasize beauty imperfections you may not have noticed in your twenties. That's why Jenevieve makes extra certain to take good care of her skin and take aging advice from the experts (such as Tammy T.!) as she gracefully nears her fourties.
How did you end up working for Got Beauty?
I was introduced to Got Beauty way back when by my dear friend and makeup aficionado Apryl Goldstone of Remarkable Jane and I was blown away by how much fun the store was. I wouldn't consider myself to be a "girly girl" per se but I was instantly taken with Got Beauty. I really have never encountered such a unique and interesting store before or since and I feel it's a Salt Lake City destination. Later on down the line we were both lucky enough to be hired by Tammy to help her launch a new website for Got Beauty. I had so much fun I ended up stalking the place until they offered me a full-time job and the rest is history.
As the Creative Director of Marketing for GB, a full time mom, and recent newlywed, free time must be hard to come by. What do you like to do when you have it?
Well, I spend the first 15 minutes of every swath of free-time panicking about how to make the perfect use of my free time. Hah. After that I just try to relax and play it by ear. My favorite things to do are spend my paycheck at Got Beauty, swing by Urban Vintage SLC for the hands-down coolest vintage furniture and random artifacts and haunt Misc. (pronounced Missey) for vintage clothing finds. Aside from that, it's long hikes (or snowboarding days) with my sweetheart and my little girl and evenings in, obsessing over Mad Men, Bobs Burgers, the Vikings or Breaking Bad. Oh and I paint every Sunday.
Where do you find inspiration for your artwork?
I've been painting and doing performance art for 10 years and my voice keeps changing but my influences remain the same with a few discoveries & additions here and there. I am completely head over heels in love with Agnes Martin, Marina Abromović, Louise Borgeois, Kiki Smith and Vanessa Beecroft. Anselm Kiefer's new documentary 'Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow' makes me want to buy a bulldozer and large tracts of land. Aside from that, my direct influences tend to include habitual over-thinking, cultural self-soothing rituals and dirt…I really love dirt. I post art things on Instagram & Facebook under @jenevievehubbard.
What are your top 3 favorite beauty products?
As soon as I landed in the GB office I started picking the brains of all the geniuses around here. Everyone has been here for umpteen years and they have all tried everything and they are all incredibly gracious, kind and helpful to boot! I feel like I arrived a hot mess and have since surfaced a (more or less) pristine artsy-boho type. The bottom line is, know yourself well enough to ask the right questions and the GBG's will point you in the right direction. Of everything I've tried, my 3 favorite items (that I never go without) are Bumble Calming Creme, Glymed Peptide Skin Recovery Complex and Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer. But the list goes on so stay tuned for my windbaggery.
If you could have lunch with any person, alive or dead, who would it be?
Oh man it's hard to pick just one… I'd have to say Louise Borgeois. She's the one famous person whose death made me cry. I really had hoped to meet her some day. She was a cantankerous old woman who was hugely successful in her art career later in life and I just can't get enough of her big scary spider sculptures.
How would you describe your personal style?
I gravitate toward a blend of boho, urban and modernist. Black, white and a bit of blue are staples in my wardrobe, having to style my hair makes me grumpy and makeup is mostly simple and minimal. So, happy skin & tame hair is a must.
How do you like to spend time with your daughter?
I'm way too busy (like most of us) so I try to set aside just-her-and-me-time every day for about 30 minutes. Meaning the cell phone is off, work is cleared from my head and chores are set aside so we can just hang out, me and her. It doesn't sound like much time but it makes a world of difference between us. We love to go on walks or color in her coloring books.
Do you have any secret tricks for battling the onset of wrinkles?
I try to sleep 8 hours, exercise 3 days a week and drink plenty of water to start. However, being a working Mom of a little girl means I often do not get enough rest and I tend to overdo it on the caffeine. That isn't so great on my skin. Plus I'm 34 so every little abuse shows up in shockingly apparent ways (Geez, I could get away with this when I was 20!) I am lucky enough to have the advice of Ms Tammy Taylor on my side and from this I've got it down to the perfect alchemy of 3 steps that keep my skin radiant.
- Twice a Week (At Night): Glymed Treatment Cream (my personal boxing gloves against the impending signs of aging).
- Every Night: Glymed Mega-Purifying Cleanser (ultra-gentle cleanser to remove makeup, oil and slime from the environment), Multivitamin Power Serum (vitamins A, C & E to combat fine lines & pigmentation) and Super Rich Repair (super-concentrated heavy-weight moisturizer so I can wake up glowing).
- Every Day: Glymed Intense Peptide Complex (for long-term moisture retention and cellular health of your skin). Pitch the overpriced Creme de La Mer and try this stuff instead. You will not believe the results in your skin after a few days of using it. I literally didn't want to put makeup on because my skin just looked so great. Worth every penny.
Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer is a must. I wear this under makeup or alone. I've tried several primers on the market and still really can't believe how much this stuff in particular smooths and primes my skin and gives me that dewey glow I am always chasing. Pair it with Jane Iredale Dream Tint (available in store only at Got Beauty) for great translucent coverage and a pretty flawless complexion.
If you could bring back one fashion trend, which would it be?
In my private universe, all men will be required to wear 1950s style suits and hats. Oh my...
What is your favorite holiday?
Holidays give me hives, so much expectation... The one I do love is Halloween, hands-down. I've already got my costume planned, Zombie-Gatsby.
What do you love about being in your thirties?
You know I have to say my thirties have turned out to be my favorite age yet. I am so unbelievably happy with my partner, my career, my family, my painting life and I feel incredibly lucky to have everything I have and still have the energy and optimism to continue to experiment and play.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Lady Ga Ga
What is your all-time favorite movie?
I Heart Huckabees
Who is your fashion icon crush?
Circa 1970s David Bowie or Circa 1970s Yoko Ono. And Alexander McQueen.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I've always wanted to go to Mongolia.
As a recent newlywed, do you have any tips for brides-to-be that make weddings a little more manageable?
Let the perfectionism go. Seriously. It's just one beautiful day and it's meaningful in its own rite, so stop obsessing over doilies, flower arrangements and confetti. Get yourself help, don't try to do it alone and save a bit of the budget to splurge on yourself - you deserve that.
