Deena Marie: SLC's Very Own Sweetheart

Professional actress, successful model, YouTube star, supreme bloggess…we seriously doubt that there’s much local celebrity Deena Marie can’t do; the world is her oyster! And we can’t think of a more perfect candidate to sport our brand spankin’ new Tequila Sunrise lipstick on the cover of our Spring POPS Box (set for release on March 1st). She was kind enough to entertain a few questions during last week’s photo shoot so we could get to know the real Deena. Lo and behold, her personality is as sweet, bright and bold as the lipstick itself (if not more so)! If you ask us, we would easily go as far as to call her SLC's very own sweetheart!

Tell me three random facts about you.
1. If I wasn’t an actor, I'd want to be a cosmologist or astronaut. Yes, I'm fascinated with outer space!
2. I'm really good at Nintendo. I've got every system, and the Legend of Zelda is my favorite game!
3. I love Ariel from The Little Mermaid. You might say she's my hair inspiration!

Where do you get your ideas for you hilarious YouTube videos?
Sometimes an idea for a character just comes to me.  It can start with a silly voice, a prop or costume I might find, or it might come from wanting to poke fun at something going on in pop culture. I never know when inspiration might strike!

When did you know you that wanted to act for a living?

I've always been a performer. I started dance when I was three years old, followed by a singing and dancing group. My first solo was singing and dancing as a monarch butterfly in a spandex butterfly costume. I did my first play in seventh grade, but I didn't truly know showbiz was my calling until the end of my junior year of high school. The magic hit me at that time for some reason, and I was in. No backup plan, I just jumped in completely. Then it was off to NYC to train, and I've been at it ever since!

What is your favorite movie of all time and why?

Moulin Rouge! It holds my record for the movie I've seen most in the theatre.  Twelve times.  I know, I know, who does that? I still remember the first time I saw it.  I was blown away. I'd never seen anything like it. It had all of my favorite elements of a movie but taken to another level.  Music, a tragic love story, Shakespearean themes, and it was just beautiful to look at.  I laughed, I cried, I left inspired.

Who is your celebrity inspiration?

I'm a little obsessed with Angelina Jolie. She's the most gorgeous woman to walk the earth.

What is your favorite photo shoot that you’ve ever done?

That's a tough one. I don't know if I can pick a favorite! I love so many for different reasons.  It might be because of what I got to wear, or maybe it was the makeup, hair, or experience. In general, I have the best time if the set is fun and friendly. The shoot with your Got Beauty team is up there! Seriously. I couldn't believe how fun and funny the entire group of women were, and on top of that so talented! It all just clicked, no hiccups, just joy. You made me feel beautiful, relaxed, and I had a blast. Doesn't get better than that!

You switch up your hairstyle and color pretty regularly. Do you have any tips for the other hair chameleons out there?

I learned the hard way that if I have jet black hair, take it to brown, then blonde, then red, it's going to be damaged.  Plain and simple.  Unless it was curled, you could really see the damage. I cut it into a bob, and then shaved my head completely. I think everyone should experience a shaved head at some point in their lives. It is so liberating. And you get another chance to grow in a healthy head of hair. When mine grew back, I still dyed it (red is my favorite).  What can I say? I should have been born a ginger!
However, when talking hair, I always try to stress to ladies that it's just hair! It doesn't define you, and there isn't just one acceptable style. Anything goes! Don't be afraid to chop it, grow it, dye it, try trends and different looks. Where's the fun in playing it safe? But of course, a great stylist to help you is key.

Do you have any secret makeup techniques that you’d like to share with us?

I once heard a slogan on a makeup commercial that said, "Less isn't more, in fact it's a bore!” I think I've always held onto that a bit. A natural and fresh face is gorgeous, don't get me wrong. But I love a done-up, put-together, glamorous look.  A cat eye and a red lip are staples for me. I love putting a little white shimmer eye shadow in the inner corners, and under the arch of my brow. Bam, there you have an instant eye-opening highlighted look!

The first thing you do when you get out of bed in the morning is…

Wish I could snooze ten more minutes! Look at my gorgeous fiancée and remember how lucky I am. Stumble to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I start a pot of coffee, and stumble back to the bathroom for hair and makeup for the day.

What is your favorite fashion accessory?

My necklace of the planet Jupiter. I wear it a lot. I also like faux reading glasses and the way that just those alone can transform you for the day. Suddenly you're in disguise, or a kind of a character.

You have absolutely lovely skin. Do you have any special skin care techniques?

I read the book, "The Skin Type Solution" by Leslie Baumann, and that helped me so much. There is a lengthy and detailed quiz to help you find the right products you should be using and when I found out my skin type, I learned that just about everything I was using was wrong! Taking time to really learn is key. My skin is dry, so I ditched what I'd been using and switched to the right kinds of lotions. For me, moisturizing is the big one. I also stay out of the sun, and make sure to give my skin breaks from makeup. I never go to bed with my makeup on, no matter how tired I am.

What is your favorite acting role that you’ve had the opportunity to play?

Probably Hermione in Shakespeare's, "The Winter's Tale" a year and a half ago. Dream come true. A tragic, poetic heroine. But I'm playing another dream role this April! I'll play Hedda in the classic "Hedda Gabler" with the Sting & Honey Company. So we'll see if that takes the top spot!

What is your dream date with your soon-to-be-hubby?

Nobody ever believes us, but we go roller skating just about every weekend! We love it. We got each other our own skates for Christmas!

How did you get into blogging?

I've kept a blog for years full of poetry, my thoughts, and experiences. I found that it was capturing the serious side of me, and I wanted to balance that with the fun side that my audience seems to know best. The beginning of the year I started a new blog where I give all my beauty secrets, fashion finds, test and review products, and more.  It's quicker, more accessible and interactive. Plus, my readers will be getting something out of it as well, with the occasional giveaway!

What is your all time favorite quote?
Oh boy…I love quotes. I collect all sorts of them on my pinterest. I have the words Star Suff tattooed on my left inner bicep; it's an ode to the quote by Carl Sagan, "The nitrogen in our DNA the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff." It reminds me there's always a bigger picture and that we are all from and going to the same place. We're all one.

And last, but certainly not least: What is your spirit animal?
The majestic unicorn, of course!
