Meet the Momshell: Beauty Buff Jessica Adams

If you frequent Got Beauty's Facebook or Twitter pages, you're more than likely to have heard the words "Beauty Buff" thrown around quite often in phrases such as "The Beauty Buff gives her two cents on bright orange lips", or "The Beauty Buff talks Spring pastels". For those that have just tuned in, we're referring to beauty bloggess Jessica Adams, who goes by the name Beauty Buff at Salt Lake Magazine headquarters. When she's not blogging about beauty, Jessica can often be found shopping for photo shoots, testing out the latest makeup trends, or writing articles for Utah Bride & Groom and Utah Style & Design.

Above all else, when she gets home every day, she leaves her Beauty Buff alter ego at the door and plays the flawless and unique role of babealicious Momshell. She's got her feet knee-deep in both worlds, given her innate skill of channelling what's glamorous while simultaneously being playful enough to sing, dance and play Legos with little Jack. We thought it was time we picked the beautiful brain of this Momshell, and see if she has a few tricks up her sleeve for Moms-to-be and beauty beginners alike (spoiler alert...she's got tons!).

First things first: what's your favorite color?
Gosh, I feel like it changes so frequently. I love all colors! Right now, though, I'd probably have to say white.

What's an average day for you at Salt Lake Magazine?
It's kind of a dream, actually. If I'm not interviewing fascinating people or writing about things related to beauty, fashion or interior design (I also work a lot with our sister magazines Utah Style & Design and Utah Bride & Groom), I'm out obtaining product for fashion photo shoots, which basically means shopping.

How did you get into the business of blogging?
I guess I've never really thought of myself as being in the business of blogging. I'm a journalist, and these days that requires knowing how to use new media, so I guess you could say I kind of learned by default. I did start a personal blog years ago, to document my newlywed life and share all the things I really love. I think I'd like to try that again someday.

What is your favorite hobby?
Shopping, gosh dangit. This should probably also be my guilty pleasure. But nothing beats the thrill that comes with a fabulous new pair of shoes, am I right?

Where do you find fashion inspiration?
Everywhere, actually. From simply observing people's street fashion and individual senses of style to reading fashion magazines and following fashion shows and runway trends, I feel like I can get an overall style of where fashion is headed.

What's your favorite part about being a mom?
Unlimited cuddles. My little Jack is a major cuddle bug and always wants to be on my lap. I also love hearing him say "I love you" and watching him learn new, exciting things.

If you could spend a day with any celebrity, who would it be?
Meryl Streep. I think she is absolutely fascinating.

What is your method for staying on top of roots and dye damage while staying platinum blonde?
Well, I've been dying it since I was 13. Since I've been allover platinum, I've had the most success with dying it myself. Once a month, I bleach it then apply a super ashy toner. I have really stubborn, yet really resilient hair. I keep the bleach off the ends and use quality styling hair products between dyes and it manages to forgive me for frying it so often. There's also this awesome product called Biosilk Silk Therapy. That stuff is good for just about anything.

What is your daily morning makeup routine?
As far as makeup goes, I like to keep it fairly simple (as in, I kind of have no other choice as a mom, makeup is a luxury most days!) and stick with a little contouring, light eyeliner and mascara.

What's your favorite way to spend time with Jack?
Playing legos. By Jack's rules, we always have to spread out the same blanket in the same spot of his room, then dump out all the legos and build while we listen to music and dance and sing along.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Rap music. I'm sure that as a mom I'm expected to set a better example for my kid, but one can only handle so many listens to "Let It Go", you know? So, yes, Jack and I definitely jam out to "Thrift Shop" and "Talk Dirty To Me" in the car. Will that change in the next year or so when he can actually sing along? Most likely. Unfortunately.

What are your top 3 favorite Got Beauty products?
1. Batiste Dry Shampoo. There's a million dry shampoos out there and this one is by far my favorite. I love that it even comes in travel size.
2. Tan Towels. My skin is about as fair as they come, and just one half-body wipe alone is enough to give me a nice little glow. Again, I love that they're handy for on-the-go.
3. Tend Skin Solution. Because who wants to deal with ingrown hairs and razor burn? It makes bikini season and brazilian waxes not suck.

What is the most surprising thing about being a mom?
The endless emotional roller coaster that comes with toddlerhood. We can go from ecstatic to meltdown in 2.2 seconds. And when I say we, I mean we. Some days I feel like a toddler myself.

Do you have any DIY at-home beauty tips?
I swear by using coconut oil as a nighttime moisturizer. I use Trader Joe's brand and apply just a very thin layer before bed, and I tell you what, it has done wonders for my skin and lessened my monthly hormonal breakouts.
I also love using organic sugar and one drop of peppermint essential oil as a lip scrub.

Do you have any beauty secrets you're willing to share with us?
Red lipstick can make your teeth appear whiter. So if you've been timidly holding out, not daring to try such a bold shade, now's your chance!

And you have any advice for moms-to-be?
Yes, and it's, "Don't take all the advice you're given." Every parent is different and so is every child. They each come equipped with different personalities, quirks and challenges, which can also vary day to day. I've found it's better to roll with the punches and cross each bridge as you come to it. Parenting books are for the birds.
