When Should I Replace My Old Makeup?

Makeup hoarding is something I'm sure many of us, including myself, are guilty of. We buy that new bright purple lip with EVERY intention of rocking it on the daily, but in reality it ends up sitting at the bottom of our bag for years searching for it's day of reckoning when it can bless your lips with violet fierceness. So how long do you hold onto those makeup products that keep piling up in the bottom of your bag? Some of them can last for years, others could cause infections after just a couple months (gross)!

No matter what product we are talking about, cosmetics trap bacteria so it's important to replace them if they are starting to get old. I'm all about being frugal and scraping the last drop out of products, but an eye infection is definitely more expensive than a new mascara. The closer a product is used to the eyes, the shorter the shelf life. Liquid products will only last a couple months, while powder When I say "shelf life" I mean the day you begin using them on your face.
Pro Tip: When in doubt, look for this symbol (left) on the back of your products, this tells you how many months the product will last once opened.

Foundation 6 months-to 1 year. To extend the life of foundation, drip it on the back of your hand before you use a brush or beauty blender to apply. Getting fingers and hands close to the mouth of the bottle can increase the germs that are getting in there.

Lipstick or Gloss-1 year. Keep your lipstick in a cool dry place and of course, don't leave it in your car on a hot day.

Brow Pencil/Eyeliner-1 year. Brow/eyeliner pencils will last a bit longer because you are constantly sharpening them each time you use them. But with a stick or twist up, I would suggest replacing after 1 year. Never share eye makeup products, even with your bestie!

Mascara + Liquid Eyeliner-3 months. This is a big one. You must replace your mascara and liquid eyeliner every 3 months to avoid eye infections, or sooner if you notice the texture becoming clumpy.

Blush/Powder- 2 years. This is the product with the longest lifespan in your makeup bag.

Eye shadow-3-6 month. While these will last you a bit longer than any of your liquid eye products, because they're powder, it's still important to replace them after a few months because of how close they come to you eyes.

Gel Eyeliner Pot- 2 months. This one is trap for bacteria, so you have to replace it more often.

Fragrance-8-10 years. Good News, that expensive perfume will most likely last you until you've used the last drop. Store it away from sunlight and keep it cool if you want it to live up to it's lifespan.
